The 188 visa is for people with business skills who want to operate a new or existing business in Australia.​​ It is a temporary visa which may allow you to apply for a permanent residency visa (Business Innovation and Investment 888 if you satisfy particular criteria.


  • Operate a new or existing business in Australia.
  • Stay in Australia for up to 4 years and 3 months.
  • Bring eligible members of your family with you.
  • Apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888) Business Innovation stream if certain requirements are met.


General requirement
  • Applicants must meet health and character (police clearance) requirements.
Business Innovation Stream - 188A
  • Under 55 years of age.
  • Score 65 on points test (see point test table).
  • Own business with minimum AUD500,000 turnover for 2 out of the last 4 financial years.
  • Net business and personal assets of AUD800,000 available to transfer to Australia.
Investor Stream - 188B
  • Under 55 years of age.
  • Score 65 on points test (see point test table).
  • Have at least 3 years of experience managing businesses and/or investments.
  • Net business and personal assets of AUD2.25 million.
  • Make a designated investment of AUD1.5 million in government securities.
Significant Investor Stream - 188C
  • Net personal and business assets of AUD5 million.
  • Make significant investment into the following:
  • At least AUD500,000 into venture capital & growth private equity.
  • At least AUD1.5 million into approved managed funds investing in emerging companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
  • At least AUD3 million into managed funds that invest into a range of assets.
Premium Investor Stream - 188D
  • Nominated by Australian Government, must invest AUD15 million into a range of assets.
Entrepreneur Stream - 188E
  • Acquired AUD200,000 investment from Australian Government agencies into applicant’s Complying Entrepreneur Activity.

Application Process

  • Step 1 - Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
  • Step 2 - Prepare proof of identity documents for you and all other applicants. You must also gather evidence of your assets and business activities.
  • Step 3 - Apply for the visa.
  • Step 4 - Receive the visa if eligible.
